DIAMOND FUNDAMENTALS

Understanding Diamond Parameters

A practical guide to diamond evaluation, screening, and report documentation.

1. COLOR

Color Grading

Evaluates absence of body color in white diamonds (D to Z scale) or hue intensity in fancy colored diamonds.

2. CLARITY

Clarity Assessment

Maps internal inclusions (crystals, clouds, feathers) and surface blemishes under 10x magnification.

3. CUT

Cut & Symmetry

Measures table %, crown angle, pavilion depth, girdle thickness, polish, and facet alignment.

4. CARAT

Carat Weight

Standard unit of weight metric (1 carat = 0.200 grams) measured using micro-balances.

SCREENING & ORIGIN

Natural vs. Laboratory-Grown Diamonds (CVD & HPHT)

Laboratory-grown diamonds possess chemical and crystal structures virtually identical to natural diamonds. Distinguishing them requires specialized laboratory instrumentation (such as UV luminescence imaging and spectroscopic screening). IGL diamond reports state origin clearly on every issued document.
